This week, we’re happy to announce the final puzzle pack that’s included in Puzzling Places, the “Variety Pack”!

The pack includes a set of puzzles with a wide range of puzzle locations, everything from France’s Mont Saint Michel island to an abandoned train car to a beautiful Kimono.

This pack was created with the Photogrammetry works of Miguel Bandera, Gerpho3D, Stephane Vogley, and Azad Balabanian.

The Variety pack includes four puzzles:

  • Le Mont Saint Michel
  • Kushi Yaki Restaurant
  • Union Pacific Railroad Car
  • Karashibori Furisode Kimono

Location Backgrounds

The puzzles in this pack come from all around the world including France, Japan, and the USA.

Le Mont Saint Michel puzzle is of the incredible tidal island town built a millennium ago in Normandy, France with a current population of around 30 people. Being a tidal island, accessibility to the island varies depending on the tides. The site is recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site. The puzzle spans the entire island with lots of details to puzzle: little buildings, streets, courtyards, tiny parks, a large abbey, a sea wall, the beach, and a small, dense forest.

Kushi Yaki Restaurant puzzle

The Kushi Yaki Restaurant puzzle features a facade of a kushiyaki restaurant in Osaka, Japan. It can be described as a “slice-of-life” puzzle because it feels like a moment in time captured in 3D. You can see crates of beer bottles stacked on top of each other, a beer keg, a restaurant and drink menu, outdoor seating tucked away until they’re needed, etc. It’s a puzzle full of rich details and vivid imagery.

Union Pacific Railroad Car puzzle

If the Kushi Yaki Restaurant puzzle focuses on capturing a moment in time that’s happening now, the Union Pacific Railroad Car puzzle is all about the past. The puzzle features an old train car in the abandoned mining ghost town of Rhyolite, NV, USA. While puzzling, you’ll hear echoes of the past reverberating throughout. The puzzle features an interior and an exterior to complete!

Karashibori Furisode Kimono puzzle

And finally, the Karashibori Furisode Kimono puzzle, a beautiful puzzle featuring a kimono from Japan. The kimono contains a Tsujigahana pattern and a Nishijinhori Nishikiori Obi (referring to the tied bow in the back). Each puzzle piece contains a medley of patterns and interesting shapes to match. The finished puzzle is truly spectacular!

Puzzle Creation Stories

Le Mont Saint Michel was created with a Photogrammetry scan by Philippe Graindorge of Gerpho3D who also was responsible for scanning the locations of the Biarritz City Pack. However, unlike the Biarritz puzzles, Mont Saint Michel was captured by shooting out of a small plane rather than a helicopter on the way back from a larger scanning mission.

The Kushi Yaki Restaurant puzzle was created with a Photogrammetry scan by Miguel Bandera on a trip to Japan. Miguel has a vast library of scans from every one of his trips, oftentimes capturing with a DSLR by foot while he’s on a walk throughout a city which is exactly how this restaurant facade was captured.

The Union Pacific Railroad Car puzzle by our very own Azad Balabanian on a trip into the deserts of Nevada in 2019. Similar to Mont Saint Michel, the train car was captured on the way back from a much larger scanning project to be made with the purpose of being inside the car in VR!

Stephane Vogley specializes in Photogrammetry scanning for Games and Marketing in Japan and has an extensive collection of Kimonos to capture. The Karashibori Furisode Kimono was specially posed and captured with the purpose of turning it into a puzzle.
